THIRTY-FIVE YEARS ON DANBURY ROAD

Judy Cusack opened the Early Bird Café at 86 Danbury Road in 1991, turning a storefront in downtown Ridgefield into a family-run diner. Her son Mike Cusack later managed the restaurant, and together they built a business that stayed open through breakfast, lunch, and dinner for more than three decades.

1991: Early Bird Café opens on Danbury Road with a classic diner menu focused on eggs, pancakes, and hot coffee.
2000s: Word spreads across Fairfield County. Reviewers and regulars begin calling it one of the best breakfast spots in Ridgefield.
2010s: The lunch crowd grows. Burgers, club sandwiches, and daily specials keep the counter seats full through the afternoon.
2020s: The café adds dinner service while keeping the same small-town counter culture that defined it from the start.

Patrons talked about French toast, eggs Benedict, omelettes, and burgers priced for everyday families. Waitresses moved table to table with coffee pots while neighbors caught up at the counter.

The Ridgefield Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire on December 26, 2025. Mike Cusack initially hoped repairs would allow a reopening, but in January 2026 the owners announced the café would close permanently. In a message to customers, they thanked generations of families for 35 years of loyalty.
